“What is a Manatee, you say? West Indian manatees are large, gray, aquatic mammals with whale-like bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. They have two forelimbs, called flippers, with three to four nails. Their head and face are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout.”
It was very interesting to visit that site. There are pictures and videos to watch. Also, you can actually adopt a manatee. You can get FREE things too, such as a bookmark, or stickers and print out a Fact Sheet.
They have a FREE newsletter. They also give you instructions on how to draw a cartoon manatee and other “Cool Manatee Stuff.”
Your kids will enjoy this site. You will enjoy it too, I think.
I got to go to a Manatee Park in Florida a few years ago and see the manatees there, up close and personal. Fascinating animals. They eat “aquatic plants and can consume about 10 – 15% of their body weight in vegetation daily.”
“The Florida manatee is a subspecies of the West Indian manatee.” There is also an Amazonian manatee called a DUGONG and a West African manatee. One called the Steller’s sea cow is now extinct.
Humans in watercrafts cause the death of many manatees and some are killed in canal locks and flood control structures. They also accidentally ingest fishhooks, LITTER, and fishing lines or become entangled in crab trap lines. Manatees are protected under two federal laws, but they are definitely on the endangered species list.

Where I live in Florida we have several waterways that we can see the manatees. There are multiple places to donate to save the manatees including buying a specialized tag for your automobile if you are a Florida resident. Great information for everyone.
