Difference between apps and working on a web page

I am quite confused about the various apps. Like for example we can buy almost anything on the amazon website still they give attractive offers on downloading the app. I mean I fail to understand how does it help them? Is an app better for us because almost similar things could be done on their website without downloading anything on my smartphone/tablet

I don't think it really helps them. But because of the new age and people doing everything from their ipad/tablet or smartphone, apps are becoming a big thing now. They are just more convienient so to say. With the app you could be on the bus to work or something and buy from the app where you couldn't do that with a laptop. It's just this world becoming more about technology than anything else.

I meant you could open webpages from the smartphones and tablets as well. Whats the use of apps

@gaurav11 not all websites have a full mobile site and I have found that even some that do have a mobile site suck.
