Why is it called a MISSile if it was made to hit things?

If you have ever gotten a girl really mad you might understand that a MISSle definitally can hit the target. Been there, done that, and it rattled my jaw.

Missile comes from the Latin world 'to send'. It never indicated if it actually had to HIT it's target. Luckily, most do and I'm good with that.
