The Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday have traded shooting guard and small forward Lance Stephenson and a first round lottery protected draft pick to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for small and power forward Jeff Green. The Grizzlies decided to trade Green to the Clippers since Green will be a free agent at the end of the 2015-16 basketball season. The benefit Green will have being traded to the Clippers is that Doc Rivers who is the current head coach of the team was his coach when Green was a member of the Boston Celtics. Stephenson was not getting much playing time with the Clippers due to his less than stellar performance on the court this season. The addition of Green on the Clippers should improve the chances of the team going deep into the playoffs in the 2015-16 basketball season. The Clippers will have the burden to either sign Green to a contract extension before the start of free agency or decide to let him test the free agent market. On the other side of the coin, Stephenson should be able to get more playing time with the Grizzles before the end of this basketball season.

I wonder if this was the big deal the Clippers were working on when they put the Stephenson for Channing Frye deal on hold. Frye went to Cleveland. So this is basically a swap of expiring contacts. There is a team option on Stephenson which likely will not be picked up. Stephenson had been playing better lately but Green should really help. I don't get the Memphis perspective. The Griz have to make the playoffs to retain their draft pick.

That is a good question why the Grizzlies gave up Green to the Clippers.
