Time and again, I am always asked to apply as Nurse 2 or Nurse 3 in the tertiary hospital where I am having my duty since 2004. The staff nurses always tell me that there are many vacant positions available, and many of my colleagues already applied and are waiting for their call. The financial benefits are always mentioned when they tell me, but I always tell them I just want to work for 8 hours then go home, watch television, and rest. A colleague of mine (senior nurse when I was the head nurse) applied for N1 but did not pass the written examination. She reapplied for N2 and was interviewed by the assistant chief of the hospital. My colleague will not have a big “reference person” to back her application up, and I think this is one of the reasons why the interviewer gave her a very hard time. He (the interviewer) asked my colleague, “Why N2 and not N1?” When my colleague said she applied for NI but did not pass and is taking the chance for N2, he asked again, “So why N2?” My colleague told me after the interview that the assistant chief just picks out the applicants who have bigger “reference persons”. Truly, it is not WHAT YOU KNOW but WHOM YOU KNOW!” Do they do that in any of the offices, private or government, in your place?

So it is who you know and not what you know 'palakasan' in short. That's really disappointing.

that is true. my colleague actually passed the written exams for N1 but she was cut off because they got the quota. then Dr. B gave her a hard time during her interview.

Oh yes, that is what happens here also in our province . Padrino as they call it . Actually , i practiced it by telling my boss to hire my husband . And he was hired . It is really an advantage when your direct boss is the general manager .

well, your husband may be qualified for the position anyway, because if not, I don't think you will do that, right, my lady?

@ridingbet Yes, he is and my boss knows this . He is actually overqualified for the position but i told him to take it than not having a job and depleting his early retirement proceeds .

Yes, they do that. There's a position in our municipal hall that is vacant for a long time and a friend of my mother told her to let me apply for that position. He said my mother just need to talk to the mayor and I will surely get that job. Our mayor knows my mother and she's a bit close to him because of church matters and I think he's our distant relative but I don't like to apply.

@ridingbet hmmm yes Ate. The employees were there for so long but they said nobody among them can take the position because they don't have the license. They might be intimidated.

Yes when applying without a "backer" is hard.

I apply with just my educational qualifications and work experiences. I am an average health care provider with no "big person" to back me up, that is why I do not intend to apply on any vacant position in the hospital

It is still an old system in our country. I don't go with such practices. That's the reason why I stopped working in the hospital institution.

but if you are already employed in a hospital, then why did you quit?

I gather that your colleague didn't get the job. It's sad if the job isn't awarded on merit.

my colleague was a good senior nurse and she is dedicated with her work. The assistant chief of the hospital did not look into her work merits but knowing she had no big reference person to back her application up, such position was not given to her.

yes, especially if the election ban is nearing. we will be electing our next president this year, so the government offices are getting new applicants for vacant positions but with a better reference person, that is why, those applicants who just boast of their scholastic achievements might not get the position if they have no big backer.

and now, we have the "election ban" period where they should not accept new employees in the government offices, but this is no longer practiced, I think
