"Deliverance" by The Mission (known as The Mission UK here in the States) was written by vocalist/guitarist Wayne Hussey after reading Marion Zimmer Bradley's book The Mists of Avalon. It's a story of the King Arthur legends told from Arthur's sister Morgan's point of view, a read I have enjoyed myself. I often refer to The Mission (my favorite band, by the way), as an arena rock band trapped in a goth band's body. And "Deliverance" definitely leans to the arena rock side. The link below carries great significance for me. It is not the official video, but does contain a great amount of footage from that video, which was shot during The Mission's headlining set at the 1989 Reading Festival in Reading, England. I was in the crowd the night this footage was recorded, which makes it special each time I watch.

I remember that song from the old 120 Minutes days on MTV! Watching that video, I wonder why some bands get pigeonholed as one thing or another. In watching the stage set-up that's nothing that you haven't seen from so-called "mainstream" "arena" bands like Rush (who had washers, dryers, and popcorn machines sitting on stage when they performed at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, for crying out loud! Just go out and sing, don't bring 60,000 pounds worth of props for two freaking songs!). I understand the necessity for genre labels, but I think that a lot of people develop a mental block toward things (mainly by what they read, given that "goth" was never really that popular in the US) and won't give it a listen. Too bad. "Deliverance" is a good song...and has nothing to do with banjos or "you sure got a purty mouth."

I think I was 29. Was stationed in Germany at the time. You would have loved it. A lot of great bands. That was my Woodstock.

LOL, sometimes I just like to read the comments, being from the mountains that the movie "Deliverance" was supposed to be or was made makes me laugh when someone automatic links that word with the movie and banjo`s, by the way I love the banjo :)
