The Chicago White Sox on Monday have signed former Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, 37, to a minor league contract.
Rollins became a free agent at the end of the 2015 baseball season when the Los Angeles Dodgers decided to let him test the free agent market.
Rollins will be invited to the White Sox Spring training facility in Glendale Arizona in an attempt to make the 25 man roster at the start of the 2016 baseball season either as the starting shortstop of the team or a reserve player.
White Sox general manager Rick Hahn believes that Rollins will fill the void after the team refused to renew the contract of shortstop Alexei Ramirez who became a free agent at the end of the 2015 baseball season.
Ramirez signed a one year, $3 million dollar contract with the San Diego Padres in late January 2016.
Rollins has played in the Major Leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies from 2000-2014 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015.
Rollins will be competing against Tyler Saladino, Tim Anderson and Carlos Sanchez to be the starting shortstop of the White Sox in the 2016 baseball season.

Wow, it has come to this for a former MVP. If he makes the ChiSox, it shows how awful they are at SS. It was blatantly obvious Rollins was done with the Dodgers last season.

@Deepizzaguy I can see that if he is basically a utility player slash coach.

I wonder if Jimmy is one of those guys who hang on longer than they should.

The White Sox see Rollins as a mentor to the younger players since his best days are behind him.
