In a comment I read yesterday on one of the Daily Bible Studies @Drosophila Wendy 789 asked if I ever did a study on the Ten Commandments. I have searched all my archives for a definite study of them and couldn't find one, so I'm rectifying that with this series on The Ten Commandments. This is not going to be in lieu of the regular Daily Bible Study. I will also have that as well. Here is my study on the First Commandment. The Ten Commandments aren’t just a list you find on a poster and give to someone as a special occasion gift. They are God’s commands to help us live godly lives. Obeying them will find God’s love and blessing on our lives. First Commandment Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. God makes it clear that He alone is God and nothing and no one should be placed before Him when it comes to our worship and obedience. You will find references to God’s command to put Him first throughout the Bible. Deuteronomy 5:7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me. (KJV) Deuteronomy 6:14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; (KJV) 2 Kings 17:35 With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them: (KJV) Jeremiah 25:6 And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt. (KJV) Jer 35:15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me. (KJV) God expects our worship to be to Him alone. Yet we tend to place many different things ahead of God making them our gods and worshiping them instead of God who created us in His image. Some of these gods include: 1. Self 2. Hobbies 3. Money 4. Job 5. Leisure activities As you can see your gods do not need to be idols made by men’s hands such as Baal, Moloch, Ashtoreth, Buddha, Confucius, or any of hundreds of gods people worship. A god is anything you place ahead of God, and God said we are to put Him first. When we do He will provide everything we need. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (KJV) Psalm 37:3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. (KJV) Following God’s command to put Him first gives us His promise to take care of us and even giving us the desires of our hearts. God isn’t a mean God who expects us to give Him our worship and not give anything in return. God loves us and takes care of us in every way, just as our parents love and take care of us. He even goes beyond the love of our parents with promises He keeps. He doesn’t forget us but does everything He can to make our lives a blessing not only to us, but all those we encounter as well. I will have the Second Commandment tomorrow. Thanks for reading.

Very well done. It is so easy for us to put other things ahead of God, but He blesses us when we put Him first.

Thank you for writing this! I do like the allegory of the modern "god". It reminds me of another verse, "no man can be the slave of two masters, he will stick to one and hate the other".

So true. When I was a kid I tested that theory and found yeah, you really can't have two masters.
