What Would You Do?

I have a friend who has been telling me, for the last twenty years or so, about all the doom that is to happen in the future. Money is going to be so worthless that people will be trying to give it away by the wheelbarrows full. Stores are trying to get everyone to use their cards so they can keep track of what you buy. Then in the near future the stores will look at what you bought and if you didn’t spend enough money over X amount of time, then the store would deny selling you anything. The day will come when no one will have any money at all to pay for anything like housing, groceries, and so forth. Everyone will be kicked out of their homes because they won’t be able to pay for it. Absolutely no one will have a place to live. One day he was telling me some disastrous thing that was going to happen. Something so horrible that it really meant basically life would not be worth living. When he got done he asked me, “What are you going to do when that happens?” I was getting pretty tired of all this doom and gloom that he had been spouting for so many years that I said, “I’m going to get a gun, go out in the backyard and shoot myself.” “Would you really do that?” he asked. “If it’s going to be as horrible as you tell it, absolutely. Life wouldn’t be worth living if that happen.” “It wouldn’t be that bad,” he said. “It sounds pretty terrible to me.” “You know what happens to people who commit suicide, don’t you? They go to hell.” “That can’t be any worse than what you just told me.” For a long time afterwards he didn’t tell me any of his doom and gloom stories. It was quite nice not to hear all his ramblings about the doom of the future. By the way, none of the horrible things he told me was going to happen ever happened.

Well at least now he doesn't bother you with all his gloom and doom talk. Good for you letting him know that.

He starting to slip in a doom and gloom again but nothing as terrible to make me say I'd shoot myself. One thing he hasn't asked me is what I would do if some of these things happen.
