Former Cincinnati Reds right handed pitcher Bronson Arroyo, 39, who signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals is hoping that his relationship with current Nationals manager Dusty Baker is strong enough to make the starting pitching rotation of the team in the 2016 Major League Baseball season.
Arroyo has pitched in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2000-2002. the Boston Red Sox from 2003-2005, the Cincinnati Reds from 2006-2013 and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014.
Arroyo did not pitch in any baseball games in the Major Leagues during the 2015 baseball season since he had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in July 2014 which sidelined him for the entire 2015 baseball season.
Baker managed Arroyo from 2008-2013 when they were members of the Cincinnati Reds. Arroyo is competing against pitchers Tanner Roark, 29 and Joe Ross, 22 to be in the lower part of the Nationals starting pitching staff during Spring training in the Reds headquarters in Viera Florida.
It remains to be seen if Arroyo can pitch in his 16th season in the Major Leagues in the 2016 Major League Baseball season or he be either sent to the minor leagues by the Opening Day game on April 4 when the Atlanta Braves will be their opponents at Turner Field in Atlanta Georgia.

We are at that time of year for minor league contracts which are no risk for teams to see if an Arroyo has anything left in the tank.

That is true. Coming back from Tommy John surgery at age 39 is a long shot at best.
