Frustration, Medicaid and Heartbreak

I just spoke to a very unfortunate lady. Though I won't reveal any of her information, of course, this really points up to me how messed up the US Government run health care system is. She'd been dependent on her husband's insurance for medical care and prescription insurance. Then, as a dear family member of hers was dying, her husband decided to cheat on her. Understandably and rightfully, she decided to divorce him. Several decades of marriage came to an end, but so did her health insurance, so she had to go to Medicaid. As I see so often, there was a computer glitch that made it look like she still had her husband's insurance - causing Medicaid to not cover any of her prescriptions. This included an antibiotic she badly needed to treat an infection. Medicaid dragged their feet on calling her old insurance, and she was stuck. When this nice lady called me, she was in an isolation room of her hospital, sick with a severe staph infection that had invaded her whole face. At one point she'd been blind and barely able to speak. I work for the company that her husband had insurance with. Originally she was just calling me to ensure her coverage with us was inactive. She mentioned to me that she always had to wait forever for Medicaid and they were always mean to her. My protective instincts took over. So much had happened to this poor woman already! I offered to take care of it. Though I had to wait on hold for about forty five minutes, I called Medicaid and gave them the information they needed to prove that she indeed did not have any other insurance! Problem solved, but it was much more difficult than it should have been, for all of us. She should have been able to get it fixed on the first day so she could have gotten her antibiotics and avoided her disfiguring infection and her hospital stay. This is the kind of crap that happens when the same people who run the DMV also run healthcare!

The states really are terrible. Though I have to say medicare people have been easy to deal with as have the social security people. I am over 65 so I know it is different from the other parts of the program. But it is terrible when non-medical people make medical decisions for people. The feds are easier than states to deal with.

@Rohvannyn a simple visit to the DMV can send people over the edge!! I have to deal with the state for my 100 year old mom and they are a nightmare.

Yes, that can be true. This lady had state Medicaid, and they really did seem pretty uncaring.

That sucks when the people are yo dont do the extra mile to solve the problem. It wont even be that big if someone cared. Im glad you did. But if in the US , the problem are on health insurances computer glitch , its a different story in our country. Only a few have health insurances and most of us dont have. And that alone is hard if you geg sick and you dont have money on hand.

Health care is supposedly universal in the US now, right? Think again. Many of us can only afford to find out what's wrong and still can't treat it. I can't tell you how many people I talk to each week who can't afford their medications now when they used to be able to.

@Rohvannyn well that is much more frustrating to know . Because before they used to have some now they cant than having nothing to begin with . But still I hope the governement will give importance to improving the delivery of care to those who cant.

@dazzledlady I'd rather the government stop interfering in the first place, so more money can be used by the people who need health care the most instead of being sucked away by bureaucracy.

glad that she got to you, who prob wasnt suppose to spend that much time, but did the right thing! Ive been in that situation (but not to the extreme horribleness that went on for her). No, it should NOT have been that hard, but it often is. I honestly think that is intentional, insurance companies want us to give up, so they can not have to pay

Yes, and Medicaid has to keep its costs down somehow! All through the hold time I kept hearing "please be patient. Eligibility can take thirty days to determine." There's no excuse for that kind of a wait! What are they doing, Telexing everything or sending it by Morse Code?

@Rohvannyn if it were for things one could actually schedule and wait for sure, but for emergency things? For infections? I think the insurance should be held responsible for taking that long, for the person getting sicker while they have to wait. no excuse

It's sad that that poor lady went through all that, and there was no reason for it. Thank goodness you came to her rescue.

Healthcare coverage should never be questioned. If a person needs medical care it should be given no questions asked. Thank you for advocating for her.

My only exposure to the DMV is Patty and Selma Bouvier in the cartoon The Simpsons! I can see what you mean...
