What are ur views on living off-grid ?

I have been increasingly hearing that people in the western countries have started living off-grid, completely independent of any energy provider or local authorities for all their requirements. Eg. electricity, water, disposing waste, grow ur own food and veggies etc. It is very difficult to do this in a developing country like India? Has anyone tried doing it here?
