A Fritter Failure

The special recipe of the week was blueberry fritters from King Arthur Flour Baking Companion. I should have been clued in by the way the recipe read that it wasn't going to work out but as I've never made fritters I figured the cook book knew better than I how to make them. I soon found out I'm smarter than it is. I have to say it seemed to me some essentials were missing in the ingredients list.
Mixed the ingredients as instructed and although it didn't look right went ahead and started frying them. First thing that happened was all the blueberries escaped from the batter and were scattered about being fried separate from the dough. I'm pretty sure that's not how blueberry fritters work. Leah said the fritters looked like fried chicken.
Found a different recipe online and we'll be trying that one tomorrow.

No, much too thick and dry. We followed the recipe exactly. I found another one online.

I have found it pays to simply stare at a recipe and think if the ingredients go together and make sense. A friend made something that sounded dreadful to me: noodles koogle. It was dreadful. I can't visualize how pasta and nutmeg go together. Yet, that was in the recipe.
