When you turn on your sink water to get it hot, what do you do with the gallons of cold water?

Many people just sand and watch the cold water go right down the drain. You are paying for this water. But you are letting it all go down the sink drain. This can't be a good thing. So a friend of mine told me what he does to use the cold water from the sink faucet while waiting for the dish water to get hot for washing dishes. He uses a large pan or more to collect the cold water until the temperature reaches hot enough for dish washing and he has a large drum in the yard that is located at a drop point from the roof to catch rain water and he pours this extra amount of cold water into either the drum or pours it directly on house plants or trees on the lawn. Waste Not Want Not as the saying goes.

I usually let it run into the sink with the drain plug in and then use it for rinsing before washing or putting in the dishwasher.

That is a good idea. The main thing is to be aware of water use and try to find better ways at reusing it before it goes down the drain and you end up still having to pay the big bill for it.
