Led by rappers Chuck D and Flava Flav, Public Enemy is a protest song fan's dream, as they are a staunch protest group, and one of hip-hop's all-time great acts. Their classic album Fear of a Black Planet, which is chock-full of protest songs, contains one of my favorite tunes, "911 is a Joke." Flava Flav handles the vocal duties on this one, a tune about slow 911 response times when the call originates from a black neighborhood. It's a fantastic protest song that still sounds great, and, as far as I know, is still relevant all these decades later.

Except for the Beasties, rap was never my thing.

People usually refer to it as rap. Public Enemy is very good at it.
