Accident Looking for a Place to Happen

While out and about, driving from client to client, or running errands for them, I encounter several near mishaps due to driver negligence. Yesterday was a record day for those encounters. I put on the blinker to enter traffic from my park spot in front of my client's home, traffic was clear mind you, I am easing into the road when off to my left from a side street a car pulled a "California Stop" and turned quickly onto the street and almost hit me in the rear. Cars pulling in front of me when nearly a car's length away from them several times having to send my foot to quickly apply the brake to avoid hitting them. People darting into oncoming traffic without clearly seeing if it was safe or not. Yes, it was cold out yesterday, but people really need to stop and think before they take that stupid step out. Sitting in Dunkin Donuts in a long line of cars to order and pick up my client's order, the SUV behind me kept rolling toward my vehicle and stopped quickly. I watched as the idiot was clearly more focused on the cell phone he was texting on. The law states that only hands free devices are to be used when operating a motor vehicle. And yes, you are operating a vehicle even in the line at Dunkin Donuts. MORON!! Following people that were on their cell phone and were so distracted that they would jerk the wheel of their car to avoid hitting other cars or from going on the sidewalks. WOW. I want to stay home. This stuff is nerve wracking.

I know exactly what you mean, it is like taking your life or you vehicle into a danger zone. We have been hit twice in recent months by distracted drivers.

@ElusiveButterfly Luckily since we were not at fault in either case, the insurance of the offending driver had to pay and no were not hurt.

The cell phone lunacy is the one I see the most. I thought it was illegal in CA. But it's not enforced, apparently.

When they first passed the law here it was enforced quite a bit. But now they seem to turn a blind eye unless there is an accident as a result of distracted driving.

I'm not much a fan of driving anymore. I've had too many accidents in the past, one even in a parking lot where the driver as talking to her passenger and neglected to stop at the STOP sign. I try and let someone else in my famiy drive. If it's a long distance, a two-way drive, my eyes get really tired, itchy and blurry so I'd rather have someone else drive... at least one way.

My husband does all of our long distance driving. Come to think about it, even if we are only going into town he will drive.

@ElusiveButterfly I usually get one of my daughters if my husband isn't with us. But hubby won't let me drive. He is too macho for that. He wouldn't let me drive once when he'd been drinking and we almost got into an accident. If I drive when he has been drinking he's always telling me how to drive. If the whole family is going somewhere, we tend to take two vehicles so we can avoid the tension.

That would explain it Jessa! Perhaps it was a plague that covered the entire nation. Ever since cell phone usage became more popular, people have lost their common sense and do foolish things.

@Jessicalynnt a fine is just a slap on the hand, but community service would give one cause to think.

@ElusiveButterfly need more handsfree laws, and time tickets, IE, you get caught being dumb (but caused no accidents) you have to do X hours of community service

It is nerve wracking. I agree, it's safest to stay home, but we can't always do that.

We can't live in a bubble. All we can do is drive defensively.

It is very nerve wracking when people are on their cell phones or just not paying attention. Glad you made it home without an incident.

it is a miracle that those idiots are still alive! Perhaps God does take care of the drunks and idiots, but they are testing his goodwill too much. Sooner or later accidents will happen, and then they will curse their bad luck or God or anything else but themselves.

Texting has really caused people to drive much worse. I feel that a red light is no longer a time to allow the other traffic to pass so much as it is for the drivers to check their cellphones, the same is true with going thru the drive thru, it can be so dangerous.

I have to often honk my horn to get the attention of people at a stop sign or red light to get them out of their trance.

Mobile phone makes many accidents in road and rail also. In a traffic among distracted drivers it is really nerve wracking.

We do take our lives in hand when we are out in traffic these days. I almost got hit the other day. I was parked on the side of a country road and needed to make a U-Turn to leave. I carefully checked the traffic and it was clear and when I pulled out....but a car turned the corner at full speed and nearly hit me broadside. He glared at me as I completed my turn after he had come to a screeching halt.

Seems that so many are in such a hurry to get somewhere. They need to slow down.
