Being the only person who drinks filtered water in my household, how often should I replace my Britta pitcher filter?

Water does in fact taste lots better when it is filtered using my Britta water pitcher filter and more tasty when it is left inside the refrigerator keeping cold, but I wonder, being the only one in my home drinking this filtered water, how long should I keep the filter before replacing it and throwing the old filter away?
I usually toss the filters after 6 months as the tiny charcoal bits start to float to the top when I have used a Britta pitcher for a long time.

They say it is good for about 3 months Anthony.
I often do not have the money to replace mine for at least 4 months.

I can't afford to change out the filter every 3 months. but I can do it once every 6 months, that said, I am the only one who uses it. I find the chlorine free water makes soups and coffee much better.
