Why is being mean a cycle? For example a father who beats up his kid is cultivating a mean character which later on will be manifested by his kid. Alhough not all the time, i just find it puzzling that there's always a cycle to violence

Yes thats true, Ive seen history repeat itself in my very own family. Being mean and selfish tends to always come back and bite you later on.

So this actually gets me worried a lot. My father in law is a real meanie.. He has issues with his attitude and behavior and he's a handful and very difficult to deal with. He is also very labile and can talk incessantly throughout the day or night how he hates all of us. My mother in law said he got that from his dad.. Which got me thinking, whAt if a few years from now, i will learn my husband is the same?

@slayer08 we all tend to feel insecure and afraid of what would happen in the future. Sometimes people learn from others mistakes. Ur husband may be exactly the opposite of your in law. He may observe and see for himself and would not want to be anything like him. A lot of people see and learn. So don't worry. Speak to your husband regarding this. It is better to be open and discuss what's troubling you.

It is often said that, history repeats itself. But I have normally seen that son of a good father, gets spoiled and that of bad one,has learnt a lesson.

My only explanation is kids learn by example? So they see their parents doing something and acting as if it is OK and they grow up with that notion? That is my only guess!!

I think there is always a bad effect if a child had been abused. It is not acceptable in our society.

@slayer08,Absolutely right. We give to society what we had received as kids.I know a man here who once beat his 5 year old son mercilessly just because the kid was requesting him to buy a sweet.

Firsy I want to say I'm sorry to hear of your situation, I only wish I could make it easier for you. People can be nasty, if if brought up in that environment it can begin a cycle. However you clearly know it's wrong, you seem very kind hearted - I don't think your follow in your stepdads footsteps.
