Why Bombay Velvet flopped

Bombay Velvet which was the dream project of Anurag Kashyap, who till then was making his usual dark, real, hard hitting movies turned out to be biggest disaster of not only his own career, but its one of the biggest disasters ever of Bollywood. Although I am a great admirer of Kashyap movies, I had skipped this one when it released due to immense negative criticism of the movie from all around. I saw the movie few days back on DVD and felt the movie may not be his best work but it was not a dud. Kashyap, who used to make low budget movies went for a budget which was almost 10 times the normal budget. The movie is brilliant technically and had amazing production values. Kashyap succesfully created the Bombay of 40's and the 50's , but in trying to deliver something par excellence, he got carried away and compromised on his biggest strength, which is dark and hard hitting screenplay. There were no complexities, the humour was missing and characters were not developed well. I feel sad for what happened to Bombay Velvet because there are lot of movies much worse than Bombay Velvet and still become successful. Bombay Velvet again proves the most ambitious projects of the filmmakers are usually their biggest disasters.

Anurag Kashyap started as writer and was part of India's best crime movie till date Satya(1998). Post that he became director himself and made some iconic movies like Dev D, Gulaal, Black Friday and Gangs of Wasseypur. His movies do not go well with masses as they are very dark and brutally honest. However he has a loyal fan base of himself who adores Kashyap brand of cinema. This being a very high budgeted movie and unlike Kashyap movie went into negative vibes all over and it was such a huge disaster that being a 80 crore production cost of the movie, it could recover only 15 crores. Here is the trailer of the movie which may give you some idea:
