The News Is So-So

I got my eyes tested today. The good news is I need new glasses. I knew that. The bad news is that I'm in the very beginning stages of cataracts. The doctor said cataracts start in the early 50's on up and cataract surgery usually doesn't happen until around 75. So that's the good and bad news regarding cataracts. Knowing I have cataracts explains a lot of things - like why I'm having trouble with night driving. I heard my son's girlfriend say - when she was on the phone with my son, that old people get night blindness. She was being funny. I don't have night blindness, but I can see why I have the trouble I do with driving. So I'll be getting new glasses. He gave me the prescription for three pairs - bifocal, reading, and computer. I then went to Wal-Mart. Because it's Saturday, they couldn't do anything for me, and after talking to her, I'm just going to order my glasses online. I know I'll be paying full cost, but there is a place online that has great low prices on glasses. So I'll start there. It's where my son got his glasses and he only paid $25 for his. I'm also going to check if that site is favorable for Swagbucks. If it is, that would be great as well. I can earn points for whatever I spend on my glasses. So that's the news. I knew I needed glasses, and now I know why I was also having trouble with night driving. So it's possible I'll have three pairs of glasses soon so I don't need to worry about being able to see to read. That's been my day so far, as well as getting the groceries I needed while I was at Wal-Mart. I also got a camera, as I said I would. Now to get it out of the package and read the instructions on how to use it, should be simple enough, and I can start sharing pictures with you all as well. I'll be leaving again in half an hour to take my younger son to work, then I have church tonight, and then I'll be able to play with you all until I pick my son up from work. Busy day today. How's your day/night going? Thanks for reading.

Sorry to hear about cataracts, the good news is, it can be mitigated. My Ma had the beginning of it at 55, she ate carrots and took cod liver oil. Her eye sight has not deteriorate since, except needing glasses for reading

I can see at night but I just do not like driving at night. Everything looks different at night.

Cataract is a common thing and so many around me have gone through that surgery which nowadays I am told is simple. I have no issues although I am a senior.

I have cataracts too and have to wait that they are ready for surgery. Hate every minute of it.

@just4him yep sure it did at the earlier stages. carrots in general are good for vision because of the vitamin A. Although carrots are not the only source of Vit A, eggs, liver, milk and cheese also has it. Cod liver oil also contains Vit A and that's what helps. But if the cataracts are already too advanced, then ya surgery might be the only route.

@Drosophila It's just beginning so not advanced at all. I love all those foods. Not sure about the cod liver oil though. I've heard how nasty that stuff tastes.

Happy to hear you'll be getting the glasses you need. Cataracts are slow growing.

Well, at least you have an explanation for your inability to see well at night. I think we all get there eventually.

Yeah. My mom had cataract surgery a few years ago and didn't need glasses anymore.

So you are getting three pairs. I use the same ones for reading that I do for the computer.

Slightly different prescription. I don't think it will work. I might just get two pairs though since the doctor said I can still do well with the computer glasses I have.

Wendy had a good suggestion to help get rid of them or not let them get any worse.

yeah online even with NO insurance seems to be better, you will need to measure your face or old glasses or something if I remember correctly

OH dear poor you. Gosh three pairs that will be expensive. I had cataracts done last year and I am no where near 75 although I might feel it some days! Actually after today with my grand children it feels a bit like it.

The online price so far is pretty good at $6.95 for the frames. I need to enter in the info for the lenses yet and then see what it comes to.

From what he said, they aren't bad, just the beginning stage of them. Surgery won't happen for many years yet.

Older eyes can be problematic. I had problems driving at night since my 50s, and my eye doctor said that was pretty normal. My eyes are pretty good these days, although I do have bifocals and I love them! Can you please email me the name of the place to get those glasses online? I'd love to check them out. I did buy a pair of glasses that are distance only, but I'm so used to my bifocals that I don't wear them. I'd like to at least find out what a new pair of glasses would cost. Thanks!

Sure. I'll email it. I need to complete the process yet of ordering them. So far I've only looked at the frames starting at $6.95. Not bad, so I'm hoping the lenses won't add too much to the cost.
