Into the abyss

I have the morning off and am heading down to the disorganized shop of that fella I've mentioned in other posts. I do some speaker restoration work for him, and he sometimes provides me with speakers that I can fix up and sell. He still owes me several hundred dollars, and I was going to accept a Dynaco Stereo 70 tube amplifier as partial payment, but the darned thing stopped working. I'm going to return the amplifier, plus another amplifier that I refinished and tested for him, this morning. I'm also going to bring home a speaker that I'll get to keep (an orphaned KLH Model 24). But I never know what's going to happen when I head into the abyss. It's the land of the unexpected. If you don't hear from me by this evening, call the authorities. It's been fun. Bay Area Bermuda Triangle--here I come! (I'll attach a picture of the 1960s Fisher 500 receiver I restored for him).

Why is it called the Bay Area Bermuda Trangle? It is because of the traffic.

@fishtiger58 Heh. I just posted about that. The traffic was the worst part of my experience yesterday. I actually brought some cool stuff home to work on.

@TheHorse yup I thought so and I'm sure the traffic is a nightmare there. Much like Chicago.

As you no doubt already know, second hand products can be extremely difficult to assess because there is no way of knowing how well or badly they have been treated in the past.

Well, I've sold a few hundred amplifiers and speakers. In general, there's a going price. And then there's a slightly higher price for really nicely restored pieces.

@TheHorse I appreciate that you will be very competent at assessing the condition, but there is always the unknown or unexpected fault.

@Asylum I mostly work on the walnut surfaces, so the dreaded randomness factor doesn't affect me. But I can diagnose and fix simple two-way (woofer and tweeter) speakers. Either they need a new driver or a new capacitor if they don't work right. I leave the active components (receivers, amplifiers, etc.) to the experts.

You are in love with him. Are you not? Else who would ever want a relationship with the 'Bermuda Triangle"

In love with the human who runs the chaotic shop? No. But I am in love with the damaged and neglected vintage loudspeaker that he often has. I'll post later about today's "score."

I made it home. I think. But there's this mist all around. And these little green men. And why are they probing my belly button?

How sad! Can you get it fixed? The cost of repair is lower there,

It does sound a little bit like you will be going into an unknown jungle. Maybe you should drop bread crumbs so you can find you way out.

You can actually build a new good one for about $400. Let me know if you want specific advice.

I am my own goon. I tend to my flowers like Nero Wolfe. But I bang heads like Archie.
