Ohlendorf became a free agent at the end of the 2015 Major League Baseball season when his contact with the Texas Rangers expired.
The Kansas City Royals who are the defending World Series champions signed Ohlendorf to a minor league contract on February 18, 2016.

Ohlendorf decided to exercise his option to be released by the Royals on March 20, 2016.

Sounds like he is lucky to get signed by a team. The Reds are pitching starved.

You are correct. Even though pitching for the Reds who are not expected to playoff contenders in 2016. it is better than being in the minor leagues or forced to retire.
