Bill Morris has been in love will Maria for a long time. They grew up together and lost their parents about the same time. In their undergrad days they were fond of each other and Bill let things slide, but in graduate school, Bill decided it was time to say something. He loved her; she was still “fond” of him. The next thing Bill knew, Maria signed up with a student tour for Central Europe. She would give him his answer when she returned. He would have to be content with that. Only he wasn’t. After six weeks passed and he had no word from Maria, Bill got on a plane. Within a few hours of landing, he found her at an inn in Transylvania. He also found Tad Hunter. Tad isn’t exactly what he appeared to be. And Bill, try as he might, could find nothing about him, other than his landlady says he pays his rent in cash and likes to sleep late. But Maria loved him. And he loved her, even if her life seemed to be draining away in front of them all. What happens is not a completely new twist on an old theme, but it does make the reader feel a bit for a character who would normally be bad guy. Explaining everything in a letter that makes up most of the story seems a clumsy device, though. All in all, an entertaining but not outstanding little read. This short story is available through Project Gutenberg and as an audiobook from Librivox. _____ Title: “Each Man Kills” Author: Victoria Glad First published: Weird Tales March 1951 Source: ISFDB

@msiduri Recently I have not read any vampire stories. Also I have never read anything by this author. As you said,it is an outstanding story.Everything being explained in a letter is indeed rather clumsy. But other wise, this would be a short novel instead of a story. So this is better.

@silvermist It didn't cross my mind, either. But it sort of made sense once Tad explained it.

When I looked up in Internet Speculative Fiction Database, I found only this story to her name. It may be that she's an obscure author or that this is the only story she had published or this is a penname or something. I thought the ending was a little odd. What did you think?

I started dinking around the link. If it's compatible with a phone, my girlfriend might be all over it.

It should be. There's an ASCII version if nothing else works.

Weird Tales is more classic pulp fiction mag. I find the name Tad Hunter amusing because it's a take on the then popular heartthrob actor Tab Hunter.

I knew there was something more. I just tuned into "hunter" as a hint that he was a vampire.
