Preparing To Publish

While I'm waiting to receive back my edited manuscript of Grue Tales I have things I need to do and to consider. Although I had a cover for the book I've decided to change it and do something with another project for it. When my cover artist contacts me I will tell her what I want and see what she can do for me. I know some of my readers will want autographed copies but from my experience the last time I did this I've decided the only one who will get an autographed copy is the one who wrote the foreword. Last time I ended up with zero reviews and no royalty showing because I purchased the books. I do not give away books or offer any swag to convince people to read my books. I know other indie and self published writers do but I think if you want to be taken seriously that is among the rules you should follow. They want a copy-they pay for a copy. After all, nobody hits up Stephen King for free copies and being traditionally published or self published shouldn't matter. The fact that one can now browse the first few pages of books on Amazon makes it easier for a person to decided if the book in question is for them.

I hear you, I offered mine free for 6 weeks and got very little reviews considering how many downloaded it. Of course if I publish again, it will be through an agent, because they also help sell the books too.

@irishidid You know, I thought I had read and left a review, now that I am not in classes anymore, I am going to search for that book. Maybe I did read it and forgot to leave a review.

Writing books and trying to sell them must be quite competitive friend. I wish you luck with it.

I only give away paperback copies of my books as gifts to very special people, and then only my first book. I will, on occasion, give a gift certificate away for the e-copy of my first book to people I meet on-line who express an interest in the series.

i've yet to attempt the self-pub thingy, though i've been thinkin' 'f such. i actually miss the days'f jest sendin' it to the editor 'n then it bein' ferwarded to the publisher. don't reckon i realized so many folks wished fer free copies?? purty sad when they didn't leave a review. that bein' said, i did purchase 2 books a friend'f mine wrote'n self published. worst $15 i've spent'n a long time. i didn't leave a review, coz it'd been purty critical. she's purty touchy 'n i figured such t'weren't worth our friendship, although i did send her a private email with my concerns.

When it comes to reviewing a friend's book it is best not to leave a review.
