Into the Groovy #9 - "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA"

Ohio's Devo formed in the early 1970's, after the Kent State Riot's. Devo is short for "devolution," named for the band's theory that mankind is devolving instead of evolving. In fact, in a Skateboarder Magazine interview way back when, they called Kent State the most devo day ever. Lately, those of us who write about music here have been discussing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As far as I'm concerned, Devo has had a HOF career and should, at some point, get in. Their first two albums are brilliant, and their hits weren't none-too-bad, either. "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" is from the band's second album, Duty Now for the Future, and proof that there is more to Devo than "Whip It."

Another one of my favorite groups. Remember their covers of Working in a Coal Mine and Satisfaction? Their most commercial sounding song would be Beautiful World.

They also did a good cover of "Secret Agent Man," which was perfect for them. They did "Beautiful World" when I saw them. It was a highlight.

The Devo song I remember most is "She's Just a Girl." They played it frequently on MTV.

Oh yeah, that is a great song. But I don't remember if they played this or not when I saw them.
