.
It was a really beautiful wedding we attended to last Sunday . The bride and the groom made their own heartwarming wedding vows..
But the big surprise was when the Marriage Celebrant introduced them as the "new Mr. and Mrs. (Bride's Surname).. I thought he made a mistake, but he also added that the couple decided to use the wife's name for their family which of course is also legal in this country .. But this is the first time I heard of a husband taking up his wife's name..
The mother of the bride told us the reason why...
The groom has two brothers in his family and the bride's parents have two daughters. And the father of the bride was an only son. They want the bride's father's name to continue so both families made that decision ..
Isn't that just the best way to honour the father of the bride? And how lovely for the father of the groom to "lose" his name especially that the groom is the first of his three sons , the younger two are both not married yet..
If you are the father of the groom, how would you feel? If you are the groom, would you take up your wife's name? ..
That was really a lovely surprise after the wedding ceremony..
Bess ..

I guess I am old fashioned as I wouldn't expect my husband (hypothetical) to do that. My maiden name will die out as my father was the only boy and I am a girl. I say maiden because I am divorced but haven't taken my maiden name back.

i know some brides retain their maiden name, but this is the first time i've heard of a groom taking his bride's name.
anyway, what matters is both parties in the wedding you attended agreed on it.

@hereandthere Yes, here in Australia, children can choose to change their names when they turn 18 years old .. Any adult can change their names by deed poll ..

This is very different my friend, although I have heard of rare instances where this was the case. It is lovely of them to do so.

Yes, they are different indeed .. But maybe in the future, more people would consider doing it too for whatever reason ..

Yes, both families made that decision.. I'm sure it's not an easy one because traditionally it's not the thing to do..
