All major railway stations are offering free Wifi in France. You can have a fast, time unlimited, 50 Mb/s connection if you register with an email address (it is free), or a slowest 20 Mb/s connection for an hour renewable if you do not want to register. A few trains are also offering free Wifi, and it should be extended soon to all high speed trains.

Wow.... That's so awesome. We are getting very slow connections - That is 256kbps and 512 kbps at our railway stations. And those are limited to number of connections as well

Many airports in England operate a similar system, but using it beyond the free time can work out quite expensive.
