has anyone ever done a Master's thesis research paper? what was your topic? did you do field research, and where?

I haven't done a thesis paper for a Master's degree, but I did do one for my BA. My topic was how James Joyce's "The Dubliners" reflected Dante's tripartite. I talked to various professors who've studied both Dante and Joyce, I read a ton of Joyce/Dante biographies as well as their novels and journal articles relating to my topic. It took such a long time for me to do it.
