I want a pet turtle but have 3 children ( one is 3ms.) Are they pretty easy to take care of? I want to keep mine in the house. I have two dogs outside.

turtle - As you can see the tank isnt huge, nor is the water bowl, and his food dish is tiny! He is eating left over scrambled eggs in this picture.
YES! we have a box turtle that is super easy! all you need is a tank, substrate,a bowl of water for him to soak in, and a heating lamp. they will eat what most people already have in your house. ie: lettuce, bananas, tomatos, spinage, eggs, carrots, fish. our turtle eats about once every two-to- three days. we change his water once or twice a week, and change his substrate once every four or five months. If you handle them enough they will respond to you when you say their name, and even come to you. if you have any questions feel free to ask me. i love our turtle, and he is so easy!

Wow you could see that? The picture is so small I can barely find the turtle. Maybe I just need glasses. LOL

Here is an article from the FDA discussing salmonella with turtles and it's impact on infants and young children. I personally wouldn't get a turtle with children that young.

it all depends on the kind of turtle you want to have as a pet.Box turtles are fairly easy to take care of as long as you have the right environment for them.Snapping turtles are the best to have because they are the most fun to watch but very hard to take care of and like I already read here turtles like all reptiles carry salmonella so if you have children and have a turtle make sure they always wash their hands after they handle it.

Yes, the just need to be fed and their cage cleaned regularly. However, I would wait a while to get one if you want because of salmonella, when I was only 6 months old I caught it from a turtle.

I was thinking the same thing after reading some of these posts. I'll probably hold off till my youngest is a past the toddler years.

I think that its a good pet but I have also heard that they have many germs so keeping this clean and washing hands ALL the time after handling or touching Every time may make it better.

turtles are never a good choice of pets...the biggest reason is that they can carry salmonella, which can be extremely dangerous, especially for children. They have specific needs that must be met in order to maintain their health, and then, depending on their size, you really don't want one taking a chunk out of one of your children's fingers. I would suggest something a little safer.

Yes, I have one. They are no trouble at all.

I would say no. They require a large amount of space (those little red earred sliders you see everywhere grow to a foot long!), special lighting, a special diet (not just pellets!), and take a lot of maintenance to keep them properly. Definitely do a lot of research before deciding on turtles.

maybe I'll wait till my kids are older before getting one. Thanks! I'll definitely do my research.
