Osteoarthritis: OTC meds that don´t help.

I just read an article about osteoarthritis. It was interesting and more so because it will mean that I will spent less money in OTC supplements that I have been taking during years. A no-no to begin with is glucosamine and chondroitin. This, in my country is not an unexpensive supplement. And I have taken if for a long time after listening to friends that say it does wonders. The second supplement that does not help is vitamin C and E and vitamin D pills. I also take them dutifully, forgetting what my sister, a scientist, told me about them. She said that it had been proven that we must take our vitamins and minerals from natural sources (food) except if a doctor discovered that we had a special ailment. Thus, I only have to have the vitamin B complex and check on food that will help me with vitaminC and D (kiwi, broccoli and sun?). What is important, the article said (and I understand) is that we must control our weight. So, let us walk, but not to the drugstore to buy more pills Are you a supplement taker?

No in fact I had read something recently that taking supplements for elderly can be deadly. All these articles it is tough to know what is the truth. I do go with your sister though Marguicha. That is my belief if we can get our nutritional needs from the food it is best. I do not take any supplements but I do only take a couple of prescriptions.

My doctor wants me to take vitamin B complex. So be it. But I will stop using the little money I have on the other pills.

I avoid taking supplements and even medications of I could. Like when I have menstrual cramps I endure the pain instead of going for a pain killer. Or when I have a fever and a sore throat I opt for water therapy instead of pills. For me if the body can still take it it's better to go natural. I don't like what pills and supplements does to our liver.

You are right. We must take pills only if it is necessary and if a doctor prescribes it.

I take a few supplements but not many as you say eat the proper food and exercise and get a little sun when you can. I think we spend way to much money on prescription medications.

I have to do what the doctors say as I have cancer. But I will not add supplements now. I will check though what food is the best.

@Marcyaz When I was with chemo, I had a list of no-no food. I was lucky to have my own veggies as I could not eat any raw vegetable from the supermarket.

I stopped taking vitamin E a long time ago. But I have kept on with these other pills that cost a fortune, one with the other.
