Top 10 Bad Brains Songs #8 - "Rise"

A couple of people I follow here on MyLot have done a Top Ten Favorite Songs by a Favorite artist series: @JohnRoberts did an excellent Linda Ronstadt list, while @FourWalls chipped in with a great Elton John list. I figured, if I was going to play, I'd jump in with what I was listening to a couple nights ago, which was Washington D.C. hardcore band Bad Brains. The classic Bad Brains lineup (vocalist H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jennifer, and drummer Earl Hudson,) a group of devout Rastafarian's, formed in the late 1970's, becoming a leader of the same D.C. hardcore scene that gave us Minor Threat. In addition to hardcore punk, however, Bad Brains was also very proficient at reggae, which has thrown a curveball at many an uninitiated listener. "Rise" is the title track from the band's 1993 album. It has a lot more of a metal influence than hardcore, yet it's still a fun listen. "Rise" also marks the absence of H.R. and Earl Hudson, replaced by Israel Joseph I and Mackie Jayson, respectively. (Oddly, even without two key members, Rise was the band's major label debut, released on Epic.) Moving away from hardcore, proved that, even without H.R. and his brother Earl, Bad Brains proved they were excellent musicians, capable of stepping outside of the style that made them famous within the punk/hardcore community.

I was just reading your comments. I know that is up to black people why they went a different route for their music. I just find it funny how many will label this band that is based on their color. People do not know rock was more or less invented off of people of color and that itself is pretty punk rock because it went against the grain. Funny how true music wins every time because you can't hear color.

@teamfreak16 It makes me wonder also. People's minds are so diluted as to what really makes a society work. Oh well, made a great music even if 95 percent hate it. Maybe when we get more evolved.

I always wonder why people have to qualify someone like, say, Jon Butcher, as being black, as if to say "he's a great guitarist for a black guy." I only brought this up because for some reason, it seems to make a difference to some people.

Even better because they are black and rock harder than the majority of white bands. I know it bothers some people, although why I have no idea.

They have pretty much been an underground band, even on a major label.

I read a little of their history. They started as a jazz fusion band?! Wow, what a transition!

Not heard of them, but 1993 was a long time ago, so maybe I forgot!

Plus, even on a major label, they have always been kind of an underground band.

Bad brains has been one of the bands to influence new bands of the year 2000. Bands of the nineties surely made a big change in the music scene.
