Saving photographs.

My laptop crashed before Christmas and I lost a few photographs that were saved inside. I usually keep them in a second drive but unfortunately, I didn't have a back up for everything. I was going through the remaining of my digital photographs today and I realized that I have a too many saved in my external drive so I decided to delete the double and the blurry pictures. How do you organize your digital photos? Do you save all of them or make a selection first?

I select only the good ones and delete the rest.

That's a good practice, I wish I was so organized! I usually postpone this for later and rarely come back to finish the task!

@besweet I have the habit of taking 2 or 3 shots of the same scene just to make sure that I get a good result. When I transfer them to the computer my first job is to sort out which ones to keep.

@Asylum I do the same! I have to try different angles or lighting to get the best picture, especially when the subject is nature or buildings. But when the selection time comes I feel so lazy to do it!

I remember my laptop crashed and all my photos were in there as well. I try to select the photos and save to an external drive, but I don't do this consistently, so there are still many unorganized photos sitting in my computer drive. I always try to organize them in folders, by dates or occasions. Can you still retrieve the photos in your laptop? If it's nothing wrong with the harddisk, you can still get back your photos.

@besweet Hope you'll still be able to retrieve the photos. I think my problem is to consistently organizing the photos. I should spend time, perhaps every 3 months, to organize the photos and do the back up as well. Well, perhaps I should really put this down in my to-do list. Thanks for reminding.

@kaka135 Thanks! It is easier if someone is an organized person in general. I am not so it's an extra effort that I need to do by schedule. This is a good practice, to organize the albums every 3 months. Do you also print some of them for physical albums?

I think I can retrieve them but I have to hire a technician to do it. It was mainly a hard disk issue, it's not damaged entirely though. The laptop was really old and other problems came up so it wasn't worth fixing. I think there is still hope for those pictures! About the organization, I believe it is best to select a consistent method of categorizing. I have both date and occasion folders like you, and it's becoming a little messy when new folders are added!

I have lost photos because I am lazy. I should take out the double and blurry pictures and then place the rest in my external drive. I don“t do that.

I think that all of us do that, especially when we change phones and never save the photos of the previous device.

This would be ideal! I used to keep physical copies too but then it became very expensive to print. I decided to print selected images for frames and photo albums only!

I lost an awful lot of photos a couple of years ago, but thankfully a lot were on Facebook or Flickr. I tend to save photos in my Dropbox up in the clouds now, but heaven knows how safe they are there, too. I should really print more pictures out and have proper copies.

I have the tendency to keep everything, I only deleted the blurry pictures this time! I like your practice better, this way everything is organized and easily accessible.

I also lost a lot of photos in the past, and I am saving them now on both my laptop and an external drive. I am saving all of them, but I have also a lot of doubles that I should delete if I was courageous... or had not enough space left on my drives.

I deleted some of them and now it's easier to go through my albums. I feel like when there are too many photos, it needs more patience to select pictures for albums or frames!

I've been using an app called Dropbox for my photos and, so far, it's working very well for me.
