Frost Last Night May Have Endangered the Grape Vines

The Wine industry here in Virginia is quite endangered right now. The early warm weather caused the vines to sprout early and now the frosty weather has endangered the crops. It was supposed to get down below freezing last night. I heard the news before I went to bed, but have not heard the news yet this morning. There are many wineries here in Virginia and those in the mountains were especially vulnerable to the frost. Last evening, one of the owners of a nearby winery was interviewed. They showed the hay bales that would be lit last night all around the vines, in the hope that the warmth and smoke would keep the frost from settling on the vines. There would be many persons minding the fires and staying up all night to protect the vines. I have seen similar scenes like this in movies, but didn’t expect to see it here, so close by. I hope that their crops weren’t ruined. Many early flowers were also in danger. My daughter had just planted some rose bushes a couple days ago. She was planning to cover them up to protect them. And she was bringing all her potted plants inside. I haven’t put anything outside yet and I’m glad. Picture by Pixabay

Frost is an enemy for many crops like fruit trees. They aren't prepared with smudge pots?

I've heard of smudge pots, but the man who was interviewed didn't mention them. He only talked about hay bales and the cameras showed his fields with the hay bales in place.

What a shame if the grape vines have been endangered by the frost. I saw a lot of people yesterday buying flowers to plant outside even though our weather is still unpredictable.

Yes, I have some plants started on my kitchen window sill, but I'm not putting anything outside until I'm sure that Spring has come to stay.

I hope that the grape vines will be all right. Is this a picture of them?

This is a Pixabay picture of a field of grape vines, very similar to what I have seen around Virginia. We have many wineries here near where I live.
