Islanders And Swimming

There's this common stereotype that if you live in an island, you should know how to swim. I'm from the Philippines and since it's an Archipelago it has thousands of islands. To be more specific around 7,107 of them. Luckily for me I can swim. But I'd have to say the above stereotype isn't applicable to all islanders. We can't all swim. Although it's a very useful skill to have specially if you live in an island home or if you travel by sea a lot.

I grew up near the beach but I don't know how to swim before I had a near drowning experience when I was about 7 years old .. since then, I gave up swimming although I love to get in the water ..

Have you considered taking a swimming lesson? Or starting out in a pool where the water level is predictable and the water is calm.

@epiffanie at least you're not afraid to get in the water, so it means you stick to the shallow side?

My friends who don't know how to swim stays on the sides of the pool or both and tread along the way. Which is totally acceptable and still fun.

If I could not swim, I would surely die as I love it so much. I would probably be very at home in your place my friend. I live for swimming, all my life, why my body is quite toned now.

I took swimming lessons to improve my swimming skills but even before that I could already swim decently thanks to my dad's teachings. Although I prefer to swim "no style" . The strokes and styles are too tedious for me.

Thank goodness I can swim. I like to do it. I wish I could do it now but there is not a pool open nearby me at this time of year.

I used to think that everyone from Montana loved to hunt and fish. But that's not true either.

Hahaha it's fun how somehow someone end up different than what we expect aye. It makes the world a more exciting place. Predictability could be boring.

Swimming is a great thing. I did not learn how until i was 30, though I did body surf as a kid in California.

Well that just shows that it is never too late to learn. I on the other hand want to learn how to surf. It's in my bucket list.

I can swim a little, not for longer distance than I was younger. Now I find backstroke easier because I can float well.

I do back stroke when I'm exhausted. I'm not a long distance swimmer as well but I think I'd survive if I'm faced by an abandon ship situation. Except if a shark will decide to find me delectable.
