Thanks to their use of loud, distorted guitars, pretty much every shoegazer band on Earth has named The Jesus and Mary Chain as a major influence. The Scottish band is led by brothers Jim and William Reid, who, themselves, can cite The Velvet Underground as an influence, as well as a love of old-school pop music, which occasionally shines through. "Blues from a Gun" was a #1 single (on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, not the Hot 100) from their 1989 album Automatic, the band's 3rd record, a song which received regular play on MTV's 120 Minutes Sunday night alternative music show. It is a guitar-heavy, distorted delight, with plenty of attitude (which starts right away with the opening lyrics.) Obviously, those of us that listen to modern rock, or alternative if you prefer, ate it up, at least, for three weeks, anyway.
Watch the official video for The Jesus And Mary Chain - Blue From A Gun. "Blues from a Gun" is a U.S. Modern Rock number-one hit from The Jesus and Mary Chai...

"Happy when it Rains" was one of their popular songs.

Another good one. Those boys could rock. It occurred to me that song was a bit of a precursor to grunge.
