Mike Silver reported the news on Friday the management of the Cincinnati Bengals have reached a one year contract extension with their head coach Marvin Lewis.
Lewis will under contract to coach the Bengals through the end of the 2017 football season.
Lewis succeeded Dick Lebeau as the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals before the start of the 2003 football season.
Even though Lewis has led the Bengals to five straight Wild Card Playoff games, he has yet to win one playoff game as the head coach of the Bengals during his 13 years of coaching the team.
Lewis by signing his one year contract extension on Friday will avoid the lame duck coaching label in 2016.
However if he is not able to lead the Bengals to a playoff win within the next two football seasons much less to a Super Bowl game, it is likely that the Bengals management will be seeking to make a coaching change after the end of the 2017 football season.
The Bengals won their last American Football Conference Playoff game in 1990 when they defeated the Houston Oilers who are now the Tennessee Titans in the Wild Card Playoffs before losing to the Oakland Raiders in the American Football Conference Divisional Playoffs.

I would think he would be on borrowed time if he can't win a playoff game. He's lucky to get the extra year but still could get fired.

You could be right since he has been on the hot seat since the Bengals lost to the Steelers in last years playoff game that the Bengals let get away in the closing moments.

I think he's a good coach, but yeah, he needs to win a playoff game or two.

I don't understand the mentality in Cincinnati. Across the street from Paul Brown Stadium they fired Dusty Baker for that very reason: he couldn't win in the playoffs. (And they replaced him with a manager who had the second-worse record in baseball last year, thanks to the Phillies losing 100 games.
) Marvin Lewis is a good regular-season coach, but the Bengals seem to be cut out to just play 16 games. Make them play that extra game and they play like they're already on vacation or whatever.
