The wonders of yesteryear: thanks for my corkscrew.

Over 50 years ago, when I got married, I soon discovered that I lacked a lot of small kitchen gadgets. I was almost a girl so I found much easier to go to my mother´s house (a few blocks away) and ask me if she´d "lend me" this or that. My mother had bought 2 steel corkscrews some years back, when we went to the US. I got one of them then. I still have it as good as new. The steel used then could last several lifetimes. There are other gadgets that are as good as that one. But I love that corkscrew in a special way because it is the only way I can now open a bottle of wine by myself. Did you get some of your gadgets from your mother´s house? Do you still have them? Share.

A lot of my things were passed down, since she maintained two households when I was a kid. I still have a lot of the dishes she gave me when my husband and I moved into our own apartment, but I've been in the process of replacing a lot of the old things because they come with a lot of emotional baggage. I'll be glad once we get the last piece of hand-me-down furniture out of here for good.

I rather like the emotional baggage some things carry. They have a story to tell.
