Gossiping, Is this the right thing to do?

I have seen people fight with reasons that so and so has just told him or her that someone was gossiping about him or her.Like for this case,these two women had been very close friends for quite sometime and one of them was staying with two of her brother's children(the brother had long passed on) and the mother was away on a business trip and in this case,this woman was the children's aunt. When the children's mother was back,this other woman had a lot of things to say to her concerning what the children's aunt was gossiping about her.This did not go well with the children's mother and she confronted the children's aunt and a fight ensued. So going about this scenario,if two people gossip about someone,should one party just go ahead and reveal what someone said about the other.I think both parties are guilty because there is no way one of them was just a listener.
