I hope to see a dog that lives to 30 years

The oldest dog (proven by birth certificate) was nearly 30 years old when he was put to death. At his death, he was 29 years and 160 days old. I wonder what contributes his longevity beside the fact that he was a cattle dog, and he spent his days running about. If I have a dog, and the dog lives beyond 20 years, I think I will put him to death. It is painful to see all the old age problems associated with longevity. By then, the old dog probably does not have teeth, and his painful joints make walking a chore.

However, what if the dog were still in good health? It would be a shame to put a dog down just because they got to that age and there wasn't anything wrong with it.

@just4him If you have an old dog that is struggling to just stand up, you would have a dilemma. You would struggle between the desire to spend more time with him, and the desire to help him end the pain.

Even if the dog is still in good health, it will still have old age problem. Humans can get walker or wheelchair to move around, but these are not available for dogs. Many old dogs do not have teeth anymore, and no way for us to get denture for them to help in eating.

@scheng1 Still to think about putting down a dog that is still healthy is inhumane.

We had to put our cat down when she was 19. We were both in the room and that was tough.

19 is a long time for the dog. Was she suffering from old age problems? It must be terribly painful to see her weaken every day.

It is like seeing elderly people suffering at later stages in life. I hope I don't live to suffer that long.

It is worse than seeing elderly people suffering. When elderly ones have joint pain, you can buy wheelchair to ease their pain of walking. There are now many types of electric wheelchair available. There are painkillers and other medication to help the old people live a quality life. These are not available to the dog.

Nowadays with all the horrible things that are in dogs and cats foods @scheng1 , life-spans for dogs and cats has significantly shortened.

Actually dogs survive longer on vegetarian diet. They have less skin problem too. I just wonder why people do not just their dogs eat potato, and vegetables.

I've never heard of a dog living so long! I wonder what his quality of life was?

This dog was a cattle dog, a working dog! Perhaps this shows that working on a fun and tiring job enhances longevity.

I have never seen any such old dog in my life too. I think the dogs in my country eat too much junk. Some of them are so fat that their tummy reaches the ground when they stand on all fours.

My dog was 16 when we had to make that painful decision. She was getting no enjoyment from life, but it still broke my heart.

It definitely is painful to part with a dog, even if the dog lives to 30. Perhaps it is doubly hard when the dog is 30, because it has been with the family for 3 decades, about the time that a baby grows up, gets married and has a kid!
