Oakland Athletics beat writer Jane Lee on Monday reported the bad news that Oakland Athletics left handed starting pitcher Felix Doubront, 28, will have Tommy John surgery to repair an injury to his pitching arm on Tuesday.
Doubront injured his left elbow during his last Spring training start. Doubront who was scheduled to be the fifth starting pitcher for the Athletics only pitch in one game for the team on April 2, 2016 before he left the game with soreness in his left elbow.
The Athletics placed Doubront on the 15 day disabled list on April 2, 2015. Since the recovery time from Tommy John surgery will take from one year to fifteen months before he can pitch again, the Athletics will probably have left handed pitcher Eric Surkamp replace Doubront as their fifth starting pitcher for the time being.
It is possible that Eric Hahn who is currently pitching for the Nashville Sounds which is the Athletics AAA minor league team will be recalled soon to replace Doubront as the fifth starting pitcher on their roster soon.

What is it with these pitchers who are babied as they are constantly blowing arms and needing Tommy John surgery? I know pitchers like Sandy Koufax had careers end without benefit of Tommy John surgery but back then they routinely tossed 300 innings and completed dozens of games and pitched on 4 man rotations. Today's pitchers start off in the minors pitching 5 "quality" innings and the slightest twinge means surgery. Conditioning and being in shape are supposed to be vastly superior to day but current pitchers can hold a candle to Gibson or Koufax or Carlton.
