"The kite runner" by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini, is more than just a novel. A friend gave it to me when I was on chemo and I read it slowly because I did not have much energy. I could not do what I now did, when I reread it. Because the novel needs a bit of knowledge of the latest situation in Afganistan. The story´s background covers from the fall of Afghanistan's monarchy through the Soviet military intervention, the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime. If only for that, the novel would be interesting. But this is no History book. It is the story of flesh and blood people. We see a main character grow from being a little rich boy until his adulthood in the US. I would say that the novel is a rite of passage. Is you are not much interested in reading, a movie was made and maybe you can see it in You Tube.

Fascinating. I recently read a nonfiction work titled Nothing to Envy, about life in North Korea. Also stories of real flesh-and-blood people.
