Thus far, in the Top 10 Songs series started by @JohnRoberts, Linda Ronstadt, Elton John, and Bad Brains have all been honored with Top 10's. Warren Zevon and The Cure are works in progress, while @FourWalls is doing a Top 20 (!) on the late Merle Haggard. Vocalist/guitarist Robert Smith has been the only constant in British post-punk band The Cure. Despite numerous lineup changes, The Cure has been consistently good since the mid-1970's. "Open," the opening track on the 1992 album Wish, is a favorite of mine. I love the music, a lot, but I also love the story behind it, something I read long ago. The record company threw a release party in Smith's honor, something that Robert Smith wanted nothing to do with. Basically, Smith was dragged to said party, where he wigged out and began drinking heavily, enough that he ended up on the floor. Judging from some of the lyrics, some psychedelic or other might also have been involved. "Open" was not a hit single, just an opener, but a very good opener. Should it be on a Top 10 list, when there are hit songs that didn't make cut? Yes, it should be on mine, because it's a favorite. There is more to The Cure than "Love Song," after all. Meanwhile, I encourage you to pick a band and do your own Top 10, because they are really fun.

Can't recall this one, but I faintly recall reading about the party

I'm thinking I read about it in Spin Magazine, which means I'm probably wrong.

There is a tendency to always dwell on the hits and popular so it's good to highlight a strong cut that many may not be familiar with. Good choice.

Yes, the "hit is the only good song on the album is the hit" crowd. It's why you see so many used copies of Depeche Mode 's Songs of Faith and Devotion in the second hand record stores. It's a great album, but people were expecting Violator part two.
