Loch Ness Monster Found Or Is It

The search for Nessie has gone on since the 19th century, with the most famous image of the monster proving to be a disappointing hoax. There have been countless cameras trained on the Loch and many submarine explorations, all finding nothing, until today. A submarine appeared to actually find the creature at last. Alas not, as they found a movie prop from the preposterous but unintentionally hilarious movie The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes, made by Billy Wilder in 1969. I have seen the film which I’m about to spoil if you want to see it without knowing the plot – Holmes and Watson actually see the Monster as it tips over their small boat but while Watson believes his own eyes the ever sceptical Holmes discovers the Monster is actually the prow of a midget submarine, literally piloted by midgets (dwarfs) as part of a fiendish pre- World War One plot by the Kaiser in Edwardian Scotland. The sub, with its monster prow designed to scare off the tourists in true Scooby Doo style was sunk as part of the movie’s climax and it is the prop of the sub the monster hunters found. It’s all rather fun. The real Nessie will no doubt miss its now salvaged stunt double. Here is a trailer for the movie showing the monster scenes. Arthur Chappell

I have seen the movie. That's pretty funny finding a prop. The excitement of finding something only to be deflated.

I enjoyed reading that on the teletext! After Basil Rathbone's, that is one of my favourite Sherlock films.
