Respect for a Teacher

In INDIA we salute the teacher by saying 'Acharya Devu Bhava 'where we equate him/her to GOD.But recently there was an incident of a teacher being fatally beaten up by some student orgnisation boys right in front of the college in the presence of police. As a society that respected teacher as GOD Himself,Why we have come to a state where he is killed by the same students ?
