This is true. I am supposed to be taking ten mg a day but I did not want my feet to swell like heart patient. I thought I would examine my choices. A. When I was first diagnosed with borderline hypertension I was a heavy coffee drinker, and a salt a holic. B. Before I was taking Amlodipine, even the 5mg dose per day, my Kidney's GFR and creatinine levels were perfect. C. After I began 5mg for a 6 month period I was still having good blood pressure at home but bad blood pressure at the doctor's office visits due to white coat syndrome. D. I was instructed to lower salt, increase exercise and lose weight. I did not do it and next visit proved I was still a bit higher than great. The next time I had a blood draw my serum creatinine levels were high normal. I began to worry. E. I was placed on 10 mg of this drug a day. I started having night time get ups to the bathroom visits 3 or more times a night like I had diabetes. My feet were swelling like crazy and the doctor wanted to consider taking me off this medicine and placing me on another called Lysinopril, but according to what I read online, both Lysinopril and Amlodipine Besylate can cause kidney problems and swelling of feet, lower legs and ankles. F. I have been on half a dose of Amlodiipine for 8 days and after the first day the swelling went away almost completely as well as the tingling sensation and I have been on the exercise peddler 65 minutes or more every morning. The results are in. I am on half dose of Amlodipine, the swelling is almost gone and I exercise an hour or more a day. I will have to see if after another few weeks and with luck I will not only feel better but be able to lower my upper and lower blood pressure without the side effects of fluid retention in my feet. I am serious about losing weight. I a currently at 208.0 and trying to get down about 10 pounds over the next several weeks by eliminating soft drinks which is a challenge in itself, not eating much white breads but I love flour tortillas. The fact that other drugs such as anti-depressants can effect kidney function I stopped taking Lithium and cut the Lorazepam in half down to .25 mg a day. So far, after 15 days I am still in the best frame of mind and body I ever was in the past 25 years.

Cutting out carbonated beverages will definitely help a great deal. I know it isn't the easiest thing to do, but once you've been without them for awhile you forget their appeal. Do you think Gluten free bread would be an alternative you might enjoy?

I have in fact, done lots of research on Celiac dieting. I lost a lot of weight on the gluten-free approach. I may go back on it. If so wheat will be off my list of things to eat.

@lookatdesktop There are a lot of products out there that are gluten free, the only problem is that they aren't always cheap either. Have you heard of graze? They are subscription box that caters to different diet approaches. They have options for gluten free things, but again it's just snacks.

@ScribbledAdNauseum , Actually no. Your mention of it here is the first I've heard of it. I will do research on this. I appreciate this from you, thank you.

Sometimes those blood pressure pills are making the situation worse. It has to be the right dosage.

Indeed. I did not stop taking the medicine, but rather cut it in half. The swelling has been reduced significantly and for that I feel better. I am enjoying daily exercise much better now. I use a peddler. It is a stationary bike that you can use while setting in a chair and it measures your caloric burn, the minutes and seconds you are on it and other things. It is great on bad weather days and safer than a walk in a park.

That is good you aremore conscious about the medicines you take. I am also taking Amlodipine 5mg once every day, and I feel I have a normal blood pressure right for my age
