Have you ever had Lyme Disease?

I was bitten by an infected tick once and it put the bulls-eye shaped mark on my skin. I didn't even know one had bitten me, and the mark was in an easy to see location. So I knew then that I had Lyme Disease in my system. I went on a medication to get rid of it and it was awful. My body got weak, and my energy was sucked out of me whenever the sunlight touched my body. Being the middle of summer, sunlight was hard to avoid, especially when the intense heat made my apartment too brutal to live in. It was painful to deal with that summer, so I have been tick paranoid ever since, and for some reason they really love to bite me. I have gotten good at sensing them on my body, which is good. I never want to experience Lyme again. Have any of you had to deal with Lyme or other tick borne illnesses?

Thankfully, no - despite having lived in a malaria zone (mosquitoes rather than ticks!) for the summer months one year!

This year I have been fortifying the yard by destroying habitat that the ticks could survive in. All long grass by buildings, fences and walls are being replaced by stone and wood chips. The stone will definitely dehydrate/kill the ticks, and the chips will at least keep them away from my legs.

@pgntwo I agree. Years ago I thought I should get someone to build a dog drone to wander the hills collecting ticks and periodically electrocuting them. After all, the tick populations have exploded in recent years. In the past I used to play in the woods and fields and never once got one on me.

As long as you get a tick off you in 12 hours you should be clear of any tick borne illness. Lyme disease actually takes 24 to 36 hours to transmit. I must have been bitten by a nymph, because they are the size of a poppy seed and easily missed.

@Jessicalynnt Yes, anything that shoves its head under your skin to drink your blood is gross and creepy. Especially how they swell like a balloon.

I've heard others experiences and they too explained how painful it is. There's a mother who advocates for those who have been diagnosed with Lyme Disease. It sound as if you really went through an ordeal. I'm sure you really take extra precautions after being bitten.

I just bought a lot of spray the other day, and I'm eliminating areas around the yard where they can survive easily. I want to make it as difficult as I can for them!

Lyme disease from what I have heard is always with you.

Unless you stop it in the beginning stages before it has a chance to establish itself. Just because you get bitten by a tick with Lyme doesn't mean you are stuck with it. It's just it can be very damaging to the nervous system, and that damage isn't easily reversed, which is why they say that it stays with you.

No I haven't, thankfully. My dog used to get them occasionally, but seemed to suffer no ill effects.

Thankfully we give our dogs Lyme vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations too. I could use both of those because I really don't want either!
