Can you bring in tomato plants in fall to lengthen harvest time?

I remember one fall when, by the time the cherry tomatoes and bell peppers were still producing there was a terrible cold front that came in and stunted their growth and put an end to any hope of harvesting any more fruit from them.
I was kind of wondering what if ... I took some of these plants that still had fruit on them, only if the cold weather would be a threat, put them indoors to let them continue to finish out their growing so I could possibly harvest more from them?
For that matter, does anyone know if they grow tomatoes in tropical zones like Hawaii and if so, do the tomatoes produce longer or is there a set limit to how many tomatoes one single plant can produce?

I do not know how many tomatoes you can get from one plant.
