Did you become what you always wanted to be?

I didn't grow up dreaming of becoming anything. Other kids, they seemed to have a clear view of what they wanted to be when they grow up. Not me. I do remember saying that I wanted to be an artist because I liked to draw but my heart wasn't really in it and that drawing is just a means of competing with my older brother. Other than drawing, I liked singing and I thought of myself to be good at it too. I got older and wanted to take Fine Arts but I got discouraged when my mom told me that it's an expensive course. Later in life, I suddenly wanted to become a singer but there are no nearby hiring and employers normally wanted younger women with attractive faces and equally attractive bodies. Where I'm from, dreams are expensive. Dreaming for free will get you nowhere which explains why there are so many of my fellow Filipinos going abroad to work because they have nothing waiting for them here. I do believe that there's something really for me and all I need to do is keep looking and keep the faith.

Speaking of becoming a singer, Do you consider trying to be an indie singer and make your own songs and sell them via itunes by your self? There are singers who managed to make a living by that way.

@rona07 I agree with you. If we really want to get what we want, we will exert everything just for our dream to materialize. As the cliche goes "If you want it, you can find all means to do it but if you don't, you will have all excuses." Do not give up @maxen07

I don't think that keeping faith will do something instead you should try harder... (no offends) I do want to learn music but I can't learn because of financial problems but this summer I'm going to buy a guitar so that I can start my learning.....so it's for both of us that we should start trying harder....

Faith and hard work goes hand in hand I guess. I wanted to travel the world and record by writing my experiences. It was my long time dream. I have been silently praying that I may someday reach that dream but my mom always tell me we do not have enough money and if we get some money we should save it first. I have been being vocal always with my dream and I think God heard my prayers. I was able to get my own passport. I worked harder to save money that I can use during my stay in abroad. I started my dream to travel just last year and it was very fulfilling indeed.

It seems like singing is a difficult career to get.... but you never know. I had some outlandish goals - to be an olympic swimmer, the president, etc. I am defi itely not doing any of that.

Keep the faith. When I was young I wanted to be a teacher. Dad wanted me to be a lawyer. Mom wanted me to be a flight attendant.

Wow, I hope you weren't torn about it, with your parents liking different things for you and from what you actually want.

Growing up I wanted to be a translator, but later on I realized that it wasn't going to happen. Now, I am okay with it.

Do not lose hope @marlina. Anything is possible as long as you live. I recommend this book entitled "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho for you to read. It is all about a boy named Santiago who have a giant dream. He faced many trials and with his determination was able to achieve his dreams. It is a very good novel.

I've always wanted to become a writer, a renowned author. I write short stories and poems. I haven't tried something big like a movie screenplay, script, play or a novel yet. I don't even know yet whether I'm good at writing or not. But still I try because you know I don't know of any other way. I don't want to live any way other than being a writer.

I also want to be a writer. That is why I have been always reading. I have found out that I cannot write if I do not read. I haven't made any stories yet but I was fond of crafting poems when I was in high school. I also would like to be a writer someday and I hope we will both achieve our dreams in the future.

Yes, I do believe research is a vital part of being a writer not only for telling a story but also finding your niche. I love reading fiction like Sidney Sheldon works. I also toyed with the idea of becoming an author and become a great story teller like Sidney Sheldon.

@maxen07 Go for it! Perhaps you can work one to two chapters a day. As they said "Great things start from small beginnings."

I think you can become a graphic artist and do it freelance. There are websites like deviantart.com where you can display your works.

I wanted to be an artist too when I was a kid. But a classmate of mine stop me back in high school, when he told me there's no money in fine arts. And I realized too back in college I have a classmate who knew better at drawing but became the best in the real state. The reality and society usually the ones who tries to brings you down.

I didn't know what I wanted to be either. I always envied the kids who knew exactly what they wanted from life but some of them changed their minds later anyway.

This is all very foreign to me. I started teaching little kids in the neighborhood after school when I was very young myself. I have always been a teacher, and retired after 40+ years of doing exactly what I wanted to do. Good luck.

Good to know that you are honest with your thoughts. I too am not sure what I want to be in future. Most people relate future only to the fields of career, money or fame. But I don't consider those to be the only elements of life. If asked what I want to be in the future, I would rather reply, 'Happy and independent!'

Nope I have not achieved all my dreams yet, but I know I still have time. Being a waitress was hardly my dream. I am lucky enough to have 2 of my dreams come true; my husband and being a mother. I love both. When I finish my book and short stories, then my dreams will be filled.

Yes, I ended up with my dream profession. I'm lucky because it's the same field my parents wanted me to pursue.
