When guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple, he snagged the late powerhouse vocalist Ronnie James Dio and formed Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (eventually just Rainbow.) The band's first single was 1975's "Man on the Silver Mountain," from Rainbow's self-titled debut album. Basically, the song sounds just like Deep Purple, only with Dio replacing Ian Gillan on vocals. The single did not chart, yet it remains a classic piece of hard rock, and this one was pretty heavy for it's time (Dio had one of rock music's best voices, which gave it a sense of said heaviness.) The song was so connected with Dio, in fact, that I learned from Wikipedia that Ronnie James has "Man on the Silver Mountain" inscribed on his gravestone. Yeah, it's that good. I give it multiple listens when it comes up on shuffle on the iPod.

Not familiar with this one, but for some reason it comes across as a Deep Purple tribute act! I shouldn't have read your bit first

It's interesting just how much it sounds like Deep Purple. It's like, why'd you bother leaving. I still love the song, though.

Man on the Silver Mountain is the best song of early Dio days.

I agree. And there were a lot of good ones to choose from.

A great 70s rocker! You are right in that Dio had a great voice.
