Miles Davis is a jazz legend, always thinking forward, pushing boundaries, and is credited with inventing new styles. Or as Quincy Jones put it, Miles "re-invented jazz five times."
According to the liner notes, Davis spent a summer listening to the streets. Wanting to make an album that would be played on more than jazz stations,
he called Def Jam founder Russell Simmons and asked him to send over some young hip-hop producers. He hired Easy Mo Bee, and thus the 1992 album Doo Bop was born. It would be Davis' final proper album, as he died during the making of the record.
"The Doo Bop Song" was a single from the album, hitting #13 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart. It's a silky smooth piece of what really would be considered acid jazz, in this case combining jazz and hip-hop. As always, Davis' muted trumpet is fantastic.
I've heard that purists can't stand it, but I maintain that Doo Bop is a fun album, led by "The Doo Bop Song," which is a really cool acid jazz tune that is still instantly recognized as Miles Davis.

I want to see the Miles Davis movie. I'm not aware of the Chet Baker film, but I would like to see it too.

If you are into Miles Davis, check out the recent movie "Miles Ahead" starring Don Cheadle as Davis and he also directed the film.

I want to see that in the worst kind of way. I'll probably have to wait until it comes out on DVD.
